ChatGPT unveils WhatsApp-like update: Group chats now Support up to 20 users

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has launched a much-anticipated "group chat" feature in its AI chatbot. This new feature will allow users to chat with friends, family, or coworkers, much like WhatsApp group chats. The company has introduced this feature as part of a larger strategy to expand its user base.
How will the 'Group Chat' feature work?
To start a group chat, users will find a 'human icon' in the top-right corner of the ChatGPT interface. By clicking on it, users can start a new group chat and invite other people.
20-person limit: A maximum of 20 people can be added to a group chat by sharing the invite link.
Profile setup: Before creating or joining a group, members will be prompted to set up their profile, adding their name and photo.
Group Controls: Users will be able to see all members in the chat sidebar. Users can exit the group at any time. Members will also have the ability to remove someone from the group, although the group creator will not be removed.
The most important thing about this feature is that ChatGPT 5.1 can also reply to group chats. This means you can ask questions or discuss topics with your friends.
However, the company clarified that auto-responses provided by AI will count towards the user's prompt count limit. This means that users who have paid for more prompts will be aware of this.
Where has it launched?
OpenAI has started rolling out this group chat feature to both the web and app versions. The update is available for all users, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro.
Currently, this feature has only been released for select countries like Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand and South Korea. Users in other countries, including India, will have to wait a little longer for this feature.
