Court’s whip on Meta’s arbitrariness: Closing porn star’s account proves costly

Bogota (The Uttam Hindu): Meta (Facebook-Instagram's parent company), one of the world's largest social media companies has suffered a major setback in a Colombian court. While hearing a case related to the pictures of a well-known porn star Esperanza Gomez, the court has ordered Meta to review and change its privacy policy.
Colombia's famous adult actress Esperanza Gomez had posted some pictures on her Instagram account in which she was wearing undergarments. Gomez claimed that these pictures were part of her work. After these pictures, Meta had closed her Instagram account which had more than 5 million followers, saying that it was a violation of its 'nudity policy'.
Hearing the case, the court termed Meta's action unfair. The court said that Meta closed Gomez's account without giving any clear reason which violated his freedom of expression and also affected his work.
The court said in its comment, "Many other accounts posting similar photos and videos as the one posted by Gomez are still active. In such a situation, action taken only against Gomez is discriminatory and the rules of Meta are also not clear."
The court has not only ordered Meta to review and change its rules but has also said that it should keep its policies in front of the users in a clear and transparent manner. There has been no response from Meta yet on this tough decision of the court.
It is worth noting that the courts of South American countries have already given such strict decisions against social media platforms. In June this year, the Supreme Court of Brazil had said that the platform itself would be responsible for any illegal or hate speech content.
