Digital blackout – Govt bans YouTube, Facebook, X and 26 social media platforms

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu)- A big news is coming from Nepal. Where, Nepal Telecommunication Authority has been ordered to block 26 social media websites including Meta and X in the country.
Ministry of Communications and Information Technology spokesperson Gajendra Thakur told ANI over the phone that the ministry had given an ultimatum to all social media to register in Nepal. In a meeting held today, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has been ordered to ban 26 social media websites effective from today. Apart from this, TikTok, Viber and three other social media platforms will be allowed to operate in Nepal as they have registered with the government, the Nepal government is requesting the companies to set up a liaison office or center in the country, the government has introduced a bill in Parliament aimed at ensuring proper management, responsibility and accountability of social media platforms. However, it has not been fully debated in Parliament yet.
