Engineering Marvel at Biswa Bangla Gate: 360-Degree City View from Above the Road

Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, has a unique example of engineering, which has become the new identity of the city. 'Biswa Bangla Gate', also known as 'Kolkata Gate', built right above a busy traffic intersection in the New Town area, is a major center of attraction for tourists and locals. It is not only a monument, but it also has a wonderful viewing gallery, restaurants and souvenir shops inside, from where a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire city can be seen.
Unique design and strength
Built by Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), the gate has a total height of 55 metres. Its four huge arches rise above the traffic island and support a circular ring (viewing gallery) at a height of 25 metres. Made of 70 tonnes of steel, the structure reflects the cultural heritage of the city and is robustly designed to withstand any natural disaster. Its beauty is further enhanced by colourful lights at night.
How to enjoy the views of the city?
The main attraction of this gate is its glass and fully air-conditioned viewing gallery. A lift is available to reach here. Tourists can stay here for 45 minutes and enjoy the beautiful views of New Town and Kolkata. Online booking is mandatory for entry into the gallery, which is available in hourly slots from 12 noon to 5 pm. Only 45 people are allowed in each slot to avoid crowding.
Delicious dishes are also arranged
A cafeteria has also been set up for the visitors, where one can enjoy delicious snacks at very affordable prices. The menu includes modern snacks like sandwiches and pizzas as well as traditional dishes like Bengal's famous fish fry, chicken chops and cutlets.
