India gives Grok AI 72-hour ultimatum over pornographic content

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : Grok AI, developed by Elon Musk's company xAI, continues to create obscene and objectionable content, despite the Indian government's strictness. On January 2, the IT Ministry wrote to social media platform X, asking for a report on the misuse of Grok and other AI services, but the situation has not improved. Now the government has given X an additional 72 hours.
Government warnings and notices:
The Center clarified that Grok AI is being used to spread obscene, nude, and illegal content. X was asked to take action and report within 72 hours due to negligence in complying with the IT Act 2000 and IT Rules 2021.
Serious allegations of targeting women and children:
According to the government, Grok AI is being used to present images of women in an obscene and degrading manner. In many cases, sexually explicit content was created through digital manipulation. International controversies have also emerged regarding child images. UK and European regulators are demanding answers from X and xAI.
X and Musk's statements, but limited impact
Following the Indian government's warning, X stated that accounts creating illegal content would be banned. Elon Musk also declared illegal AI content a crime. Nevertheless, pornographic content continues to circulate on the platform, raising questions about the effectiveness of X's policies.
Digital security and the challenge of law
According to experts and the government, this is not just a user error but a failure of platform security. Modifying someone's image without consent into a pornographic form constitutes digital sexual harassment, and is a growing concern in India, the UK, and Europe.
