India Launches Chip-Based e-Passports: Know the Benefits and How to Apply

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a revolutionary step forward for Indian travel documents, the Ministry of External Affairs has fully implemented the much-awaited e-Passport facility nationwide. Launched as a pilot project in April 2024, the service will be officially available to all citizens from June 2025, making international travel safer and faster than ever before.
What is this new e-passport?
It looks similar to a traditional passport, but its true power lies in a small electronic chip embedded in its cover. This radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip and antenna securely store all the passport holder's biometric information, such as fingerprints and digital photo. This technology makes it virtually impossible to counterfeit the passport or tamper with the data. It is identified by a special golden mark below the word 'Passport' on the cover. This passport complies with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, making it recognized worldwide.
How to apply for an e-passport?
The government has clarified that those who currently hold a valid passport do not need to immediately replace it. New applicants or citizens seeking re-issues can now apply for an e-passport. The eligibility and required documents (identity card, address proof, date of birth proof) are the same as for a regular passport.
Application Process:
Visit the Passport Seva Portal and fill the online application form.
Book an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and pay the fees online.
Visit the PSK on the scheduled date with your original documents.
There your biometric information (fingerprint, photo) will be taken and documents will be verified.
Your e-passport will be issued after the process is completed.
What benefits will the common citizen have?
The biometric data stored in the chip will completely prevent identity theft and fraud. The process at airport immigration counters will be significantly expedited. In countries with automated e-gates, travelers will be able to complete immigration in seconds without contact with any officials. This move further strengthens the Indian passport globally.
