New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi described artificial intelligence (AI) as a major revolution and a positive force for change in the history of humanity, saying that its positive and responsible use is a boon for the well-being of humanity, but its misuse can lead to destruction. He also presented India's vision of AI, "Human," which outlines its ethical, accountable, sovereign, and legal nature. He said that this vision of India will become a vital link for the welfare of humanity in the 21st century. Addressing leading AI experts from around the world, heads of state from several countries, the UN Secretary General, and industrialists at the "India AI Impact" conference in Gurugram, Modi said that every few centuries, a decisive turning point occurs in human history that determines the direction of civilization and changes the way of thinking.
He said that initially its impact is not even realized, but later it becomes the basis of civilization. Citing examples of several stages in ancient history, he said that AI is a revolution of change in human history. It is enhancing human capabilities by making machines intelligent. He said that when talking about ancient stages, the difference is that this time the speed and scale of change is unexpected. He said that in view of this, we have to fulfill an equally big vision and responsibility.
Modi said that there are many big questions, such as what form of AI we will leave to future generations, and an even bigger question is what we do with AI today. Citing the example of nuclear energy, he said, "We have seen its destruction and now we are also seeing its positive contribution to humanity." Similarly, AI is a positive force; if it goes astray, it can be destructive, but if it is guided correctly, it can be a blessing. The Prime Minister said that India views AI from the perspective of "Sarvajana Hitaay, Sarvajana Sukhay," and this is our standard. He said, "The key is to ensure that humans are not limited to data and raw materials for AI. Therefore, AI must be democratized, made a medium of equality, with special attention to the Global South." He said that AI must be given free rein, but control must also be maintained; the future will depend on the direction we take it in. Modi also presented the "Human" vision, clarifying India's approach to AI. This means that the use of AI must be based on ethical systems, accountable governance, national sovereignty, accessible and inclusive, and a legitimate and legal framework.
He said that this "human" vision of India will be a key component of humanity's well-being in the 21st century. He emphasized that India sees its destiny and future in AI.
