Starlink clarifies India pricing: Glitch caused confusion over ₹8,600 monthly plan and ₹34,000 hardware kit

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Elon Musk's satellite internet company Starlink has now put an end to the controversy surrounding its entry into India and pricing. Yesterday, social media and news reports spread like wildfire that Starlink's monthly internet plan in India would cost ₹8,600, and the outright cost of the hardware (kit) would be ₹34,000. These exorbitant prices surprised Indian users. However, Starlink has now officially clarified that the prices displayed on its website were not real, but merely a "dummy data" display that went live due to a technical glitch.
Given the seriousness of the matter, Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, clarified the situation on the social media platform X. She explained that the viral prices were merely placeholders, appearing on the website due to a configuration error. She emphasized that Starlink has not yet launched its services in India, nor is it accepting any pre-orders. The Starlink India website is not yet fully live, and the data used to base the speculation does not reflect the actual prices set for India. The company has promptly fixed the bug that led to this misinformation.
The company has clarified that actual plans and prices will be revealed only after receiving final approval from the Indian government. Starlink is currently under "pending regulatory approval" in India, and the launch process is currently in its final stages. It's worth noting that Elon Musk's company aims to provide high-speed satellite internet to remote areas of India. According to industry buzz, the approval process is progressing slowly, and once the green light is granted, the company will officially announce its plans, whether cheaper or more expensive. Until then, it would be wrong to believe the viral screenshots to be true.
