Sundar Pichai meets PM Modi, announces Google's Rs 1.33 lakh crore investment in India's AI future

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that Google's gigawatt-scale data center infrastructure is in line with our vision of a 'developed India.' Google has announced plans to build an Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam. The company will invest approximately $15 billion over the next five years (2026-2030). This is the company's largest investment in the country to date.
"It is a matter of great pleasure to launch the Google AI Hub in the vibrant city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh," PM Modi said on the social media platform 'X'. The Prime Minister further said that this multi-faceted investment, which includes gigawatt-scale data center infrastructure, will provide a powerful impetus to the democratization of technology. Responding to a post by Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, PM Modi said that this investment will ensure AI for all, provide cutting-edge tools to our citizens, boost our digital economy and secure India's place as a global technology leader.
Pichai had earlier posted that he was delighted to speak with Prime Minister Modi and share our plans for the first Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam. He said, "This hub combines gigawatt-scale computing capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. Through this, we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country." Google will build the AI Hub in collaboration with AdaniConnex, an Adani Group company. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said, "Adani Group is proud to partner with Google on this landmark project, which will define the future of India's digital landscape."
He added, "This is more than just an investment in infrastructure. It's an investment in the soul of an emerging nation. This partnership is a testament to our shared vision of nation-building and our commitment to empowering every Indian with 21st-century tools. Visakhapatnam is now poised to become a global destination for technology, and we are thrilled to be the architects of this historic journey."
