Amritsar(The Uttam Hindu): Several cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been reported in Punjab’s Ajnala region, prompting the Animal Husbandry Department and local administration to step up vigilance. ASF is a highly fatal viral disease that affects only pigs, with no risk of transmission to humans or other animals.

Dr. Ravinder Singh Kang, Assistant Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, confirmed that after unusual pig deaths on a local farm, samples were sent for testing. Some returned positive for ASF. He clarified that this is not a type of flu, but a deadly fever specific to pigs. To prevent further spread, infected pigs have been culled and the farm is being disinfected.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), ASF can cause up to 100% mortality in domestic and wild pigs. While harmless to humans, it poses a serious threat to pig farming and the agricultural economy.

Meanwhile, following heavy rains and flooding, the Punjab government has intensified fogging drives in Ajnala and other affected areas to prevent vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that a high-level review meeting will be held on Friday to assess flood-related issues, including health services, relief operations, compensation distribution, and flood management.

Separately, a medical team from AIIMS New Delhi conducted a four-day relief campaign (September 6–9) in flood-hit areas, providing primary healthcare and life-saving aid to thousands of residents. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, avoid panic, and follow health and livestock department advisories to contain the crisis.
