Over 25 Crore Join Bharat Bandh 2025—Know Which Services Will Be Hit

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): India is witnessing one of its largest coordinated strikes today, July 9, 2025, as more than 25 crore workers and employees across various sectors participate in a nationwide Bharat Bandh called by a united platform of ten major central trade unions.
The strike, which has drawn participation from employees in banking, insurance, electricity, coal mining, postal services, and construction sectors, also includes farmers and rural laborers. According to trade union leaders, the protest is a response to the government's “anti-labor and anti-farmer” policies that are eroding job security and workers’ rights.
All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur stated that the bandh reflects growing discontent with rising unemployment and the lack of permanent job opportunities. She emphasized that government policies are “destroying the livelihood and dignity of the working class.”
Impact Across Sectors
Banking: Major bank unions have confirmed participation. While there is no official bank holiday, services are expected to be severely affected.
Insurance: Employees from major insurance companies, especially in West Bengal, have joined the strike.
Electricity: Over 2.7 million power sector employees are taking part, raising fears of electricity outages in several states.
Railways: Rail operations are expected to continue, but minor delays may occur due to staff support for the protest.
Public Transport: Public transport services in certain states may face partial or full disruption.
Education: Schools and colleges remain open as the government has not declared any official holiday.
