Business Failure Turns Deadly: Four of a Family Dead After Consuming Poison, One Critical

Nalanda(The Uttam Hindu): A shocking incident in Bihar’s Nalanda district has left an entire region in grief after five members of the same family consumed poison, leading to the death of four while one remains in critical condition.
The tragic event unfolded on Friday evening in Pawapuri village, where Dharmendra Kumar, originally from Sheikhpura district, lived with his wife Soni Kumari, daughters Deepa and Arika, and son Shivam Kumar. After consuming the poison, their health deteriorated rapidly, and they were rushed to Veens Hospital, where four of them succumbed during treatment.
Police investigations reveal that Dharmendra Kumar, who had opened a saree shop named Shri Kali Maa Saree Center six months ago, was facing continuous business losses and had fallen into a debt of nearly five lakh rupees. It is suspected that the severe financial crisis pushed him to give sulphas poison to his entire family. However, the youngest son miraculously survived as he reportedly refused to take the tablet and threw it away.
The police have taken the child into protective custody and are monitoring his condition closely. Senior officers, including Rajgir DSP Sunil Kumar, Inspector Manish Bhardwaj, and Pawapuri OP in-charge, reached the scene soon after the incident and began a detailed investigation. The bodies have been sent for postmortem, and authorities are trying to ascertain the exact circumstances behind the horrific step. The entire locality is in shock over the devastating turn of events, once again highlighting how mounting financial stress and mental pressure can lead to unimaginable tragedies.
