Cheteshwar Pujara Announces Retirement from Professional Cricket, Ends Glorious Career

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Indian cricket’s very own ‘Wall’ Cheteshwar Pujara has announced his retirement from professional cricket, leaving fans and the cricketing fraternity surprised. Pujara, who last represented India in a Test match in 2023, was hoping for a comeback with consistent performances in domestic cricket. However, he has now decided to call time on his illustrious career.
Speaking about his decision, Pujara revealed that retirement was not on his mind when he was in the UK recently for commentary during the India-England Test series. “I was eagerly looking forward to this domestic season. But before the Ranji Trophy preparations began, I spoke to my family, friends, and teammates about my future. Eventually, I felt it was the right moment to step aside,” he said.
The veteran batter acknowledged that while he could have played another season, he wanted to create opportunities for young players in the Saurashtra team. “It’s the right time to hand over the responsibility to the next generation,” Pujara stated.
Known for his calm demeanor both on and off the field, Pujara turned emotional while recalling the contributions of his late mother, Reena Pujara, and his father-coach, Arvind Pujara. “My father has always been my inspiration because of his dedication to the game. My mother, who passed away when I was 17, taught me how to be a good human being,” he said with gratitude.
Pujara also expressed heartfelt thanks to his wife, Pooja, for her constant support, mentioning her book that highlights the importance of family sacrifice in shaping a successful cricketer.
