Beijing/Slovenia (The Uttam Hindu): A new geopolitical storm has erupted after U.S. President Donald Trump urged NATO member nations to impose 50–100% tariffs on China and completely halt the purchase of Russian oil. The move, according to Trump, would weaken Moscow’s war machine and push for an end to the Ukraine conflict.

In a letter addressed to NATO countries—also shared on his social media platform Truth Social—Trump wrote: “I am prepared to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, but only if all NATO members agree and take similar steps. China must face tariffs between 50 to 100 percent, which can be lifted once the Russia-Ukraine war ends.”

Trump described the conflict as a “deadly but foolish war” and claimed that countries like Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia, along with China and India, continue to purchase Russian oil despite sanctions. He insisted that secondary restrictions might be necessary to tighten the pressure.

China’s sharp response came from Slovenia, where Foreign Minister Wang Yi is on an official visit. Wang issued a direct warning to Washington, stating:

“Beijing neither plots wars nor takes part in them. War is never the solution, and economic sanctions only make situations more complicated.”

He emphasized China’s consistent foreign policy over 30 years, which treats nations—big or small—on equal footing. Wang also described Slovenia as an “old friend” of China and highlighted ties based on mutual respect and cooperation.

Wang Yi further added that the global situation is increasingly chaotic, but stressed that China and Europe should be partners, not rivals. According to him, both sides have a historic responsibility to choose cooperation over confrontation.
