Morning Shock: ED Team, Backed by CRPF, Searches Bhupesh Baghel’s Son’s House in ₹3,200 Crore Liquor Scam

Raipur(The Uttam Hindu): In a major development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted an early morning raid at the Bhilai residence of Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. The raid, carried out around 6:30 AM on Friday with CRPF security, is linked to the multi-crore liquor scam and alleged financial irregularities in the state.
Sources said the ED action is part of an ongoing investigation into the ₹3,200 crore liquor scam being probed by ED and the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW). So far, five charge sheets have been filed, naming 29 excise department officials, including retired officers, for large-scale corruption in the state’s liquor distribution system.
This raid comes at a politically sensitive time—on the last day of the Chhattisgarh Assembly session. Interestingly, former CM Bhupesh Baghel was in Bhilai instead of Raipur, where he was scheduled to raise issues related to deforestation and environmental impact in the assembly.
Earlier, on July 7, the EOW filed the fourth supplementary charge sheet, revising the scam amount from ₹2,161 crore to ₹3,200 crore. ED has yet to release an official statement, and the searches at Chaitanya Baghel’s residence are still ongoing.
