New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): To ensure smoother toll operations and curb the misuse of "Loose FASTags" (also called “Tag-in-Hand”), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has streamlined its policy and directed toll agencies and concessionaires to report such cases immediately. These tags, when not affixed to windshields, pose operational challenges, including false chargebacks and delays at toll lanes.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways highlighted that some vehicle owners deliberately avoid affixing FASTags, causing congestion and inefficiency. In light of upcoming initiatives like Annual Pass System and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, ensuring tag authenticity has become a top priority.

NHAI has introduced a dedicated email ID for swift reporting, promising immediate action to blacklist or hotlist misused tags. With over 98% FASTag penetration across the country, authorities believe this move will further streamline toll collection and enhance travel convenience for highway users.

Earlier this month, the government also slashed toll charges by up to 50% on select highway stretches, including tunnels, bridges, and elevated roads, to make travel more affordable for the public.
