Grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda Convicted in Rape Case; Broke Down in Tears in Court

Bengaluru (The Uttam Hindu): In the Karnataka sex tape scandal that shook the country, former Janata Dal (Secular) MP and former Prime Minister HD Devegowda's grandson Prajwal Revanna has been given a severe blow by the Karnataka High Court. The court on Friday convicted Prajwal Revanna in a case related to sexual harassment and rape. On hearing the verdict, Revanna started crying in the courtroom. The court will soon announce the punishment in this case.

The case came to light during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when pen drives were found at several places in Bengaluru. These pen drives allegedly contained 3,000 to 5,000 video clips showing Prajwal Revanna sexually assaulting several women. The faces of the victims were also not blurred in these videos. The matter gained momentum when a woman working in Revanna's house also filed a complaint of sexual harassment.

Considering the seriousness of the case, the Congress government of the state had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT). After investigation, the SIT had registered a total of 4 cases against Prajwal on serious charges like rape, molestation, blackmailing and threatening. Currently, the court has convicted him in one of these cases, while the verdict in the other cases is yet to come.

Prajwal Revanna belongs to an influential political family. He is the grandson of former Prime Minister of India HD Deve Gowda. Prajwal's father HD Revanna was a minister in the Karnataka government and uncle HD Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister. Prajwal himself was elected MP from Hassan Lok Sabha seat in 2019, although he faced defeat in the 2024 elections. After this scandal came to light, JDS suspended him from the party. The investigation also revealed that Revanna used to lure women with government jobs after sexually harassing them.
