New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Now GST will have only two slabs — 5% and 18% instead of four. With this, common essentials like soap and shampoo, as well as ACs and cars, will become cheaper. This decision was taken in the 56th GST Council meeting. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced this on September 3. She said that items like milk, bread, paratha, paneer, and several food products will be exempt from GST. Personal health and life insurance will also no longer be taxed. 33 life-saving medicines, drugs for rare diseases, and critical illnesses will be completely tax-free.

GST 2.0… Now only two slabs, 5% and 18%, effective from September 22; see what gets cheaper and costlier:

Luxury goods and tobacco products will now attract 40% GST instead of 28%. Medium and large cars, and motorcycles above 350cc will fall under this slab. The Finance Minister said the new rates will take effect from September 22, the first day of Navratri. However, the new 40% GST rate on tobacco products will not be implemented immediately.

The purpose of these changes is to give relief to the common man, support small businesses, and discourage the use of harmful products like tobacco by raising taxes. At the same time, tax has been increased on luxury vehicles, tobacco products, caffeinated drinks, and even cricket match tickets.
