Amritsar (The Uttam Hindu): A highly sensitive incident occurred late Monday night near the Golden Temple when a young man desecrated a Gutka Sahib (a small booklet containing Sikh prayers) outside the Sri Guru Arjan Niwas Sarai, adjacent to the temple complex. Following the incident, tension spread in the area, and the gathered devotees apprehended the accused on the spot.

The youth, identified as Gurpreet Singh, is said to be a resident of the Golden Temple vicinity. The enraged devotees thrashed him and handed him over to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The SGPC, in turn, handed him over to the police and demanded strict legal action.

Police arrived at the scene immediately and brought the situation under control. Gurpreet Singh was taken into custody, and an investigation is underway. According to the police, the accused has not yet revealed the motive behind his actions.

ADCP Jasroop Singh Bath stated that the police acted swiftly upon receiving information about the desecration of Gutka Sahib and arrested the accused. A case has been registered under the relevant sections, and further investigation is ongoing.

This incident has taken place at a time when security in Amritsar was already on high alert ahead of June 6, the anniversary of Operation Blue Star. Every year, this day is observed as Ghallughara Diwas (Martyrdom Day), and a large number of devotees and pilgrims gather in the city. Both the police and the SGPC have urged people to maintain peace and not fall for rumors.
