IMD Issues Red Alert: Heavy Rains Predicted in J&K, Himachal, Odisha and Several States in Next 3 Hours

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a fresh alert for heavy rainfall across several states of the country over the next few hours. According to IMD’s latest update, issued via social media platform X, heavy to very heavy showers are likely in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, north Punjab, north Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, southwest Uttar Pradesh, northwest and eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha in the next three hours.

Adding to the monsoon intensity, the IMD confirmed that a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has become well-marked as of 5:30 AM Wednesday. This weather system is expected to move west-northwestwards toward Odisha within the next 24 hours, bringing heavy rainfall to Odisha and its adjoining regions.

Meanwhile, Jammu & Kashmir has already been lashed by record-breaking rain in the past 24 hours. Between 8:30 AM on September 2 and 5:30 AM on September 3, 2025, several regions recorded extreme rainfall:

Reasi: 230.5 mm (very heavy rain)

Katra: 193 mm

Batote: 157.3 mm

Doda: 114 mm

Bhadarwah: 96.2 mm

Banihal: 95 mm

Ramban: 82 mm

Jammu Observatory: 81 mm

Kokernag: 68.2 mm

Qazigund: 68 mm

Rajouri: 57.4 mm

Pahalgam: 55 mm

Kishtwar: 50 mm

Samba: 48 mm

Srinagar Observatory: 32 mm

Apart from Jammu & Kashmir, heavy to very heavy rain was reported in Chhattisgarh, while moderate showers were recorded in Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, coastal Odisha, coastal Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands over the last 24 hours.

With the Bay of Bengal system intensifying and widespread rains forecasted, the IMD has advised citizens and state authorities to remain on high alert for possible flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
