Modi govt springs into action on Ladakh: special envoy to Delhi; LG calls emergency meet

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): While the situation in Ladakh has calmed down following the unrest and violence, the situation remains tense. Recently, there was widespread unrest over the demand for full statehood and autonomy under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
To control the situation, the central government has sent a special envoy from Delhi who will engage with local representatives and organizations to try to find a solution. Meanwhile, a high-level review meeting has been convened under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta. Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal, DGP SD Singh Jamwal, and senior Army and ITBP officers will attend. The meeting will discuss the causes of the violence and the lapses by security agencies.
Security tightened, 50 detained
A strict curfew is in effect in Leh. However, if the situation remains normal, some relaxations may be introduced by this evening. Police have so far detained approximately 50 people. Paramilitary forces and police are conducting continuous patrols in sensitive areas.
People grappling with crisis
Due to the curfew, people are facing shortages of essential items like rations, milk, and vegetables. Therefore, the government has decided to allow limited time for purchasing essential goods. All schools and colleges in Leh have been ordered closed on Friday and Saturday.
Hunger strike ends, investigation demanded
Following the violence, activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 15-day hunger strike. He said the violence had hurt the spirit of the movement. Meanwhile, independent Ladakh MP Mohammad Hanifa questioned the police firing and demanded an investigation. He said the public's demands are legitimate and the government should seriously consider them.
