Mumbai(The Uttam Hindu): Torrential rains lashed India’s financial capital Mumbai from Saturday night, August 16, leaving large parts of the city submerged and daily life in chaos. The downpour paralyzed transport services, disrupted vehicular movement, and forced thousands of residents indoors. In view of the worsening situation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and several districts of Maharashtra.

Reports revealed severe waterlogging in areas including Kurla, Chembur, Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, King’s Circle, and Gandhi Market, with water reaching knee level in many places. Traffic came to a standstill in flooded zones like Gandhi Market. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued an advisory urging citizens to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary.

The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts, placing them under red alert. Orange alerts were issued for Nashik, Pune, Satara, Jalgaon, and Gadchiroli, while yellow alerts remain in effect for Kolhapur, Amravati, Wardha, and Nagpur. According to the weather office, the rains are triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

Adding to the crisis, a tragic landslide occurred at Janakalyan Society in Vikhroli-Ghatkopar on Saturday night, leaving two people dead and two others injured. The area recorded over 207 mm of rainfall, which officials say was the primary cause of the incident. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing as authorities work to clear debris and assist affected families.
