New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created a new milestone in Indian politics by becoming the country’s second-longest serving prime minister, overtaking Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,077 days in office.

Now, only India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, stands ahead of him in terms of tenure. Modi has been in power for 24 years—serving as Gujarat’s Chief Minister before leading the nation for the past 11 years. He is also the first post-independence born leader to become India’s Prime Minister.

Modi is the only non-Congress prime minister to serve for such an extended period, breaking Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s record. Including his Gujarat tenure, Modi holds the longest continuous leadership of any elected government in India. He is also the second leader after Nehru to win three consecutive general elections, achieving two back-to-back full majority mandates—something no non-Congress PM has done before. Moreover, Modi has won six straight elections—three state assembly and three Lok Sabha polls—cementing his place in India’s political history.
