New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): After Nepal’s major political shake-up and the formation of a new interim government, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Nepal’s new Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, on Thursday. The call comes at a time when Nepal is trying to move towards stability after a period of political turmoil.

PM Modi expressed condolences over the recent tragic incidents in Nepal and assured India’s unwavering support in all possible ways. Sharing details of the conversation on social media platform ‘X’, Modi wrote:

“Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government. Conveyed heartfelt condolences for the recent tragic loss of lives and reiterated India’s steadfast support for her efforts towards peace and stability.”

PM Modi also extended advance greetings to Karki and the people of Nepal on the occasion of their National Day, to be celebrated tomorrow.

Sushila Karki, who took charge last week, has become Nepal’s first female interim Prime Minister. Her appointment followed a prolonged political crisis that forced former PM K.P. Sharma Oli to resign under public pressure after nationwide protests against his decision to impose restrictions on social media. The consensus for Karki’s leadership emerged after a meeting between President Ram Chandra Paudel, senior military officials, and youth protest leaders.

PM Modi has consistently welcomed Karki’s appointment. While addressing a rally in Imphal, Manipur, last Saturday, he described her elevation as “a remarkable example of women empowerment.” He emphasized the strong cultural and historical ties between India and Nepal, reaffirming India’s friendship and support. This phone call is being viewed as a clear signal of India’s strong backing for Nepal’s efforts toward peace and political stability.
