Shock in Nepal: Interim PM Chosen Through Discord Gaming App Poll with Just 7,713 Votes

Kathmandu (The Uttam Hindu): In a stunning revelation that has rocked Nepal’s political landscape, reports claim that the country’s new Interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, was not selected through political consensus but via an online poll conducted on the American gaming app Discord.
According to sources, after the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, Nepal’s Gen-Z leaders launched a survey on Discord featuring candidates like Dharan’s Mayor Harka Sampang, Mahabir Pun, and Sushila Karki. Out of 7,713 votes, nearly 50% (3,833 votes) went in Karki’s favor. On this basis, Gen-Z representatives reportedly approached President Ram Chandra Paudel, leading to her appointment as interim PM.
The process, however, has sparked outrage and raised two burning questions:
Who initiated this Discord poll and under what authority?
Who exactly were the 7,713 voters? Since Discord’s privacy policy conceals user locations, it remains unclear whether the votes came solely from Nepalese citizens or from users worldwide.
Ironically, within just three days of her appointment, protests have erupted against Karki — led by the very group that championed her selection. According to Nepali media, Sudhan Gurung and his team accused the PM of making unilateral decisions and staged demonstrations outside the Prime Minister’s residence over cabinet expansion plans.
This unprecedented development has left Nepal’s democracy facing global scrutiny, blurring the line between online gaming platforms and real-world governance.
