Chaos in Nepal: Prison Break Turns Deadly, 2 Inmates Shot Dead by Army; Bangladeshi Prisoner Caught Crossing Into India

Kathmandu(The Uttam Hindu): Political instability and unrest in Nepal took a violent turn after inmates at Ramechhap district jail attempted a mass escape, triggering chaos inside the prison. To control the situation, the Nepal Army opened fire, killing two prisoners and injuring at least 10 others. This marks the first major jail shooting since the army assumed direct control of the country.
Meanwhile, India has gone on high alert along its border with Nepal. On Wednesday, the 47th battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) detained a Bangladeshi national who had fled Nepal. The individual, identified as Mohammad Abul Hasan Dhali, had been imprisoned in Kathmandu for the past five years on gold smuggling charges.
According to SSB Commandant Sanjay Pandey, Dhali was apprehended near the Raxaul border in Bihar around 3 p.m. after raising suspicion. During questioning, he confessed to escaping from Kathmandu jail. He was later handed over to Harpur police station for further action.
Sources indicate that Nepal’s law and order situation has sharply deteriorated amid ongoing protests against Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government. Reports suggest that in the past two days alone, nearly 15,000 prisoners have escaped from jails across different districts, raising serious security concerns. The wave of jailbreaks and violent protests has not only deepened Nepal’s political crisis but also put security agencies in neighboring countries on high alert.
