Balasore (The Uttam Hindu): In a shocking case that has shaken Odisha’s education circles, police have arrested two leaders of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in connection with the suicide of a 20-year-old girl student from Fakir Mohan College. The student had earlier accused the head of her department of sexual harassment and later attempted self-immolation. With over 95% burns, she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

According to senior police officials, the arrested individuals include Jyoti Prakash Biswal and Subhra Sambait Nayak, the joint secretary of ABVP’s Odisha unit. Notably, Biswal is the same student who had sustained burn injuries while allegedly trying to rescue the victim and was recently discharged from SCB Medical College in Cuttack. However, investigations revealed disturbing details suggesting that instead of saving her, some students, including the accused, had psychologically provoked her and possibly assisted in her suicide attempt.

Earlier in the investigation, police had also arrested assistant professor Samiran Kumar Sahu and former principal Dilip Ghosh after the student had accused them of sexual harassment. The girl’s suicide has triggered outrage across the state, raising serious questions about the safety of women on college campuses and the role of student political organizations. The police have assured that they are probing all angles, and further arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
