PM Modi Flags Off Maruti’s First Electric SUV – e Vitara to Hit 100 Global Markets

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the second day of his two-day Gujarat visit, flagged off Maruti Suzuki’s first fully electric SUV – Maruti e Vitara – at the company’s Hansalpur plant near Ahmedabad. Alongside this launch, local production of hybrid battery electrodes also began, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s electric mobility ecosystem.
The production of the Maruti e Vitara has officially started at the Hansalpur facility. The SUV will be manufactured locally and exported to more than 100 countries, including Japan and several European nations. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the assembly line, signaling the beginning of a new era in India’s automobile industry.
To boost the EV ecosystem, Maruti Suzuki has also commenced the production of hybrid battery electrodes at the plant, reducing dependency on imports and supporting India’s self-reliance in advanced mobility solutions.
In terms of design, the Maruti e Vitara closely resembles last year’s Maruti eVX Concept, with some subtle changes such as softer angles, tri-slash LED DRLs, charging port integration, and sculpted rear wheel arches. The rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar add a futuristic touch.
The electric SUV comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, measuring 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase – making it bigger than rivals like Hyundai Creta. Its 180 mm ground clearance suits Indian roads well, while the kerb weight ranges from 1,702 to 1,899 kg depending on the variant.
This “Made in India” electric SUV is a milestone for Maruti Suzuki, highlighting India’s growing role in the global electric vehicle market.
