Prostate Cancer Cases Rising in Men: Know the Disease and Its Early Symptoms

New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): In today’s time, health has become everyone’s top priority — and awareness around prostate cancer is also rising. Prostate cancer affects men, often progressing slowly, which makes early detection and timely treatment critical. With the right steps at the right time, this disease can be managed, allowing patients to live a healthy life. Understanding its symptoms and treatment options is the first step toward prevention and care.
According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, the prostate is a small gland located below the bladder and surrounding the urethra, and it is part of the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer occurs when cells in this gland begin to grow uncontrollably.
In most cases, the disease shows no obvious symptoms in its early stages. However, some common signs include frequent urination, pain or burning while urinating, difficulty holding urine, and increased nighttime urination. Some men may also experience pain in the lower back or hips.
The risk of prostate cancer increases with age, particularly among men over 50. Regular screening plays a crucial role in detection. Doctors usually recommend tests like a digital rectal examination (DRE) to physically check the prostate and a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test, where elevated PSA levels may indicate the need for further investigation.
When caught early, prostate cancer can often be treated successfully. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy. In some cases, doctors may suggest only active surveillance with routine check-ups instead of immediate treatment.
