Lucknow (The Uttam Hindu): Congress MP Rahul Gandhi surrendered in Lucknow's MP-MLA court on Tuesday in a defamation case related to his comment on the Indian Army. However, the court granted him bail within just 5 minutes. This case is related to a statement made by him during the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra'.

The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Alok Verma ordered the release of Rahul Gandhi on two bail bonds of Rs 20,000 each. Rahul's lawyer Pranshu Agarwal filed a bail plea, which was immediately accepted by the court. Rahul Gandhi arrived directly from Delhi to Lucknow's Amausi airport and from there left for the court. He stayed in the court premises for about 30 minutes and left for Delhi after getting bail.

What is the whole matter?

The case was filed by former Border Roads Organisation (BRO) director Uday Shankar Srivastava on February 11. The petition said that Rahul Gandhi had made a comment on the Indian Army during the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' on December 16, 2022. Referring to the India-China border clash on December 9, 2022, he had said that "Chinese soldiers were beating Indian Army soldiers."

The petitioner claimed that Rahul's statement was contrary to facts, misleading and demoralising, thereby hurting the sentiments of soldiers and their families.

5 Summons were issued for being absent from the hearing

When Rahul Gandhi did not appear in the last five hearings in this case, the court issued summons against him and ordered him to appear in person. His lawyer had sought exemption from appearance, which was rejected by the court. Following this order, Rahul Gandhi appeared in the court today.
