From 26/11 Prosecutor to Ex-Secretary and Historian: Four Experts Nominated to Rajya Sabha

New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): In a significant development, President Droupadi Murmu has nominated four distinguished individuals to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India's Parliament, under Article 80 of the Constitution. The nominated members include renowned criminal lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, eminent historian Dr. Meenakshi Jain, and noted social activist from Kerala C. Sadanandan Master.
This move comes as part of the constitutional provision that allows the President to nominate individuals with exceptional contributions in fields like literature, science, art, and social service.
Ujjwal Nikam is one of India's most recognized legal minds, having served as the public prosecutor in several high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and the 1993 Bombay blasts. His inclusion is seen as recognition of his decades of service in the Indian legal system.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a veteran diplomat and former Indian Foreign Secretary, brings with him extensive experience in international relations and diplomacy. He has held several key ambassadorial positions and also served as India's envoy to the United States.
Dr. Meenakshi Jain, a respected historian and academic, is known for her extensive research in Indian history and cultural heritage. She has authored several scholarly works and served on important education-related committees.
C. Sadanandan Master, a social reformer from Kerala, has worked tirelessly in the field of education and community development. A victim of political violence himself, his grassroots activism and contributions to society have earned him deep respect across the region.
All four nominations aim to bring diverse expertise and representation to the Rajya Sabha. The government noted that these appointments reflect the Centre’s commitment to inclusive governance by incorporating voices from law, diplomacy, history, and grassroots activism into the national dialogue.
