“Firecracker Ban Can’t Be Just for Delhi – Apply It Nationwide!” Supreme Court’s Big Statement

New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): The Supreme Court on Friday stated that firecracker bans due to pollution cannot apply solely to Delhi. While hearing a plea related to Delhi’s Diwali firecracker ban, the bench noted that any such restriction must be implemented across the country, not just in one region.
Chief Justice B.R. Gavai remarked that Delhi shouldn't receive special treatment just because it's home to the country’s elite. He emphasized that the right to clean air belongs to all citizens, not just those in the NCR.
The court questioned why environmental policies are being selectively applied when other cities face similar or worse pollution levels. The observation comes amid ongoing debates around seasonal bans on firecrackers, especially during festivals. The court’s stance signals a push for uniform pollution control measures across India, urging lawmakers to adopt a balanced and inclusive approach.
