Tech Boost for Punjab: Centre Approves ₹4,594 Crore Semiconductor Plant

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Taking a big step towards promoting electronics manufacturing in the country, the central government has approved setting up a semiconductor plant in Punjab. This historic decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under this scheme, a total of four new plants will be set up across the country, which will cost Rs 4,594 crore.

Giving information in a press conference, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this semiconductor industry is strategically important for the development of any country. He said, today four important semiconductor projects have been approved. Of these, one plant will be set up in Mohali, Punjab, two in Odisha and one in Andhra Pradesh.

This plant to be set up in Mohali, Punjab will be of CDIL, which has signed an agreement with a Korean company. The semiconductors made in this plant will be used in various electronic devices. The Punjab government was already preparing for this project and this decision is expected to bring large-scale investment in the state and create thousands of employment opportunities for the youth.

The Union Minister said that two of these four projects are related to highly advanced technology. A silicon carbide semiconductor plant will be set up in Odisha, which is used in important sectors like missiles, space equipment and railway engines. The second plant will also be set up in Odisha where 3D glass semiconductors will be manufactured, in which world's leading companies like Intel will invest. The fourth plant will be set up by ACIP in Andhra Pradesh.

He expressed confidence that the construction work of all these projects will start within the next six months. With the establishment of these plants, India will become self-reliant in the field of semiconductors and will play an important role in the global supply chain.
