New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): In a dramatic turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump has cancelled his proposed visit to India, sending shockwaves through diplomatic circles. The cancellation comes amid escalating tensions over Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, coupled with what is now being dubbed the “Nobel controversy”.

According to a New York Times report, Trump was initially scheduled to visit India later this year and had personally assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his participation in the upcoming Quad Summit, which India is hosting. However, worsening relations have forced a complete rollback of those plans.

So far, neither Washington nor New Delhi has issued an official statement, but senior diplomatic sources confirm that relations have visibly deteriorated in recent months.

Trade Wars and a Nobel Bombshell

The rift deepened further when Trump repeatedly claimed credit for diffusing the four-day military standoff between India and Pakistan earlier this year. India, however, firmly rejected his assertions, insisting that the conflict was resolved solely through bilateral military channels and no third-party intervention was involved.

According to insiders, Prime Minister Modi conveyed a strong message through Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, making it clear that India does not support or acknowledge any external mediation in its regional matters.

But the diplomatic rift didn’t stop there. During a phone call on June 17, Trump allegedly reiterated his claim of brokering peace and went a step further—saying Pakistan planned to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize for his “efforts.” He even hinted at expecting Modi’s support in this campaign, a move the Indian side reportedly rejected outright. Sources say Modi’s cold dismissal of the idea angered Trump, becoming a key trigger in the breakdown of ties.
