After Landslide Tragedy That Claimed 34 Lives, Maa Vaishno Devi Yatra Opens Once Again

Katra (The Uttam Hindu) – After a suspension of 22 days, the sacred Maa Vaishno Devi Yatra resumed on Wednesday morning, bringing immense relief and joy to devotees camping in Katra. The pilgrimage, halted on August 26 due to a deadly landslide that claimed 34 lives and injured 20 others, was restarted at 6 AM today following improved weather and safety checks along the Trikuta Hills route.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) confirmed the resumption and urged pilgrims to carry valid identification and follow RFID-based tracking for safety. Hundreds of devotees waiting in Katra were filled with happiness upon hearing the announcement. “We came from Pune two days ago. Going back without darshan was never an option,” said one elated devotee.
Authorities have urged pilgrims to strictly use designated routes, follow security guidelines, and remain alert to weather updates. According to the Meteorological Department in Srinagar, thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 40 kmph, and heavy rainfall are likely in the Jammu region between September 16–19.
With the Sharadiya Navratri festival starting on September 22, the number of devotees is expected to rise sharply. The administration has assured robust arrangements for crowd management and security to ensure smooth pilgrimage operations.
