Vice Presidential Election: BJP Likely to Nominate Thawarchand Gehlot or Om Mathur, EC to Announce Poll Dates Soon

New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu): After the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Election Commission has initiated preparations for the vice-presidential election and will announce the dates soon.
BJP is likely to field a candidate aligned closely with its ideology, with Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot emerging as the strongest contender, while Sikkim Governor Om Mathur is also being discussed within the party circles. The Election Commission has begun finalizing the electoral college, appointing the returning officer, and completing other formalities required for the poll.
Sources suggest that BJP will try to nominate its own candidate and seek the support of allies rather than offering the post to any coalition partner. Dhankhar, who was serving as the 14th Vice President of India, resigned unexpectedly on the night of July 21, and his resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. The 74-year-old’s term was supposed to continue until August 10, 2027, making his abrupt exit a major political development.
