Political Showdown Intensifies in Bengal as Mamata Banerjee to Introduce Censure Motion Against BJP

Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): The political battlefield in West Bengal is heating up ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in a fierce political confrontation. As part of this ongoing conflict, the Mamata Banerjee government has announced a special session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from September 1 to 4. During this session, a Censure Motion will be introduced to condemn the alleged atrocities against Bengalis in BJP-ruled states.
Additionally, a resolution may be passed in the Assembly against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process conducted in Bihar, which has drawn widespread criticism. Opposition parties across the nation are rallying against the issue.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has frequently raised concerns about the alleged atrocities against Bengalis in states where the BJP holds power, from Rajasthan to Odisha. Using this as a basis, the TMC now plans to bring the Censure Motion in the Assembly. Furthermore, Mamata has launched the ‘Shramshree Yojana’, a welfare scheme for Bengali migrant workers returning from other states, offering ₹500 per month in financial assistance.
According to sources, TMC fears that, similar to Bihar, the Election Commission might conduct an SIR in Bengal before the Assembly elections. Opposition parties have alleged that the SIR campaign in Bihar led to the removal of 65 lakh names from the draft voter list, which they claim is an attack on their voting rights.
Interestingly, on a national level, TMC and Congress are united on this issue as part of the ‘INDIA’ alliance. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is currently leading a ‘Voter Rights Yatra’ in Bihar, and sources have confirmed that TMC MPs Yusuf Pathan and Lalitesh Tripathi will join him in the final leg of the journey on Monday. This move is seen as an attempt to showcase opposition unity at the national level.
In a rally in Siwan on Friday, Rahul Gandhi accused the Modi government of “vote theft” with the help of the Election Commission, causing panic among BJP leaders. With this issue now entering the Bengal Assembly, it is clear that political tensions are set to escalate in the coming days.
