Wheat MSP hiked by ₹160: Modi govt's gift to farmers before Rabi season

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Wednesday evening brought great news for the country's crores of food providers. Just before the wheat sowing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has given a big gift to the farmers by announcing a bumper increase of ₹160 per quintal in the Minimum Support Price (MSP). After this decision, the government rate of wheat has now become ₹2585 per quintal. This important decision on the MSP of Rabi crops was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has brought smiles on the faces of farmers across the country including Punjab.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, while announcing the cabinet decisions, said that the MSP for wheat has been increased from ₹2425 to ₹2585 per quintal for the marketing year 2026-27. This is a direct increase of 6.59%. Farmers will receive this increased rate for the crop, whose sowing will now begin at the end of October and for which government procurement will begin in April 2026.
This government decision comes at a time when farmers are preparing to sow Rabi crops. This increase in MSP will not only ensure farmers receive better prices for their crops but will also encourage them to cultivate wheat on larger acreage. The government has also set a target of a record wheat production of 119 million tons this year.
This direct increase of ₹160 in the MSP will benefit farmers' incomes. This will provide them relief from rising crop costs and strengthen their financial position. Experts believe that this move will create a positive environment in the agricultural sector and encourage farmers to invest in farming with greater enthusiasm.
