Chicken Dinner Turns Deadly: Doctors Find Unexpected Object in Patient's Stomach

Riyadh (The Uttam Hindu): A 29-year-old man in Saudi Arabia went to a hospital complaining of stomach pain. He told the doctors that he was having unbearable pain ever since he ate chicken, but he could not understand the real reason. At first glance, the doctors guessed that maybe he had accidentally swallowed a chicken bone, but when the investigation was done, the truth that came out was much more strange and deadly.

According to the 'Mirror' report, the young man reached the emergency room after suffering from severe pain in the lower abdomen. When the doctors did a CT scan on him, a small object of 3.7 cm was seen in the stomach, which further deepened the suspicion of a bone. But seeing the seriousness of the situation, the doctors decided to do an emergency laparoscopy (a type of surgery).

During surgery, when the doctors looked inside the stomach, they were stunned. Not a chicken bone but a wooden toothpick was stuck in the patient's stomach. This toothpick had pierced his intestine, which posed a serious threat to his life. The doctors successfully pulled out the toothpick and sealed the place.

After the operation, when the doctors told the patient about this, he remembered the whole incident. He told that one night before the pain started, he had gone to sleep with a toothpick in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it in his sleep.

Fortunately, the young man's life was saved and he was discharged from the hospital three days after the operation. But this case is not as common as it sounds. According to doctors, a review of 136 cases of swallowing toothpicks shows that it is an extremely serious medical emergency, with a mortality rate of about 10%. That is, a small mistake made in sleep could have taken the young man's life.
