Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Chaos erupted inside the Maharashtra Assembly premises as BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar and supporters of NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MLA Jitendra Awhad engaged in a violent scuffle.

Videos from the assembly lobby show punches and kicks being exchanged, with legislators and their aides involved in the heated clash. Tensions between Padalkar and Awhad had been simmering for a long time, but it turned physical after a recent provocative remark by Awhad about a woman’s ‘mangalsutra’ while walking on the assembly’s red carpet, which was widely seen as a dig at Padalkar, though Awhad didn’t name anyone.

Earlier, the two leaders were seen trading abuses near the Assembly gate, escalating the political tension.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Violence inside the Vidhan Bhavan is unacceptable. Strict action must be taken against those who attacked BJP MLA Padalkar in the assembly lobby.” BJP’s Sanjay Upadhyay demanded an immediate inquiry into the scuffle.

Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar assured that a probe will be conducted swiftly. Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray slammed the incident, saying, “Who gave these goons passes to enter the assembly? Such hooliganism is unacceptable. The Speaker must act against those responsible for letting them in.” The political slugfest is expected to intensify further, with both parties holding each other responsible for the shocking brawl inside the state assembly.
