₹7.5 Crore Net Worth: Meet India’s Richest Beggar Owns Flats, Shops Yet He Begs 12 Hours a Day

Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Bharat Jain, a Mumbai resident, has gained fame as the world’s richest beggar, reportedly amassing a net worth of ₹7.5 crore. His story offers a startling glimpse into India’s begging industry, where some individuals earn more than many salaried professionals.
For nearly four decades, Jain has begged in Mumbai’s bustling area between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Azad Maidan. Born into poverty, he began begging to support his family, who struggled with hunger and lacked basic education opportunities. Over the years, he has transformed his fortunes through sheer persistence, earning ₹2,000–2,500 daily by begging 10–12 hours without rest — an income that amounts to ₹60,000–75,000 per month.
But Jain isn’t just a beggar; he’s an astute investor. He owns two flats worth ₹1.4 crore in Mumbai, where he lives with his wife, two sons, father, and brother. Additionally, he possesses two shops in Thane, generating a steady rental income of ₹30,000 monthly. His children have studied at top convent schools and now help run the family’s stationery business.
Despite this financial success, Jain chooses to continue begging. He told, “I enjoy begging, and I don’t want to give it up.” He also said he frequently donates to temples and charities, insisting, “I’m not greedy; I’m generous.” Reports highlight that Jain is not alone in earning big through begging. Others include Laxmi Das from Kolkata with a net worth of around ₹1 crore. India has over 400,000 people regularly engaged in begging.
