New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – Dev Deepawali holds special significance in Hinduism. Dev Deepawali means “Deepawali of the Gods.” This festival is celebrated most grandly in Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh. Every year, Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Kartik.
According to religious beliefs, all the gods and goddesses come to Kashi on this day. On this day, the gods and goddesses descend from heaven to earth, bathe in the Ganges, and also light lamps. This year, Dev Diwali will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. In Varanasi, this festival is celebrated 15 days after Diwali. In the evening, millions of lamps are lit on the banks of the Ganges, making the entire city appear bathed in golden light. Rows of lamps are placed on more than 100 ghats, temples, and boats. At night, a grand Ganga Aarti, religious processions, and cultural programs are organized. On this holy day, anyone who sincerely worships Lord Shiva and Vishnu is relieved of darkness and brings happiness and prosperity to their homes.

When lamps are lit on the ghats of Varanasi, it is believed that the gods themselves are present there. On this holy day, people also light lamps in their homes and streets.
Bathing in the Ganges holds special significance - Bathing in the Ganges in the morning on the day of Dev Deepawali holds special significance. It is considered a sacred bath, which liberates one from sins and bestows auspicious results. After bathing, both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshipped. Earthen lamps are lit and floated in the Ganges on this holy day. It is believed that donating lamps and worshipping on this day yields manifold benefits.
