Surat (The Uttam Hindu) : Panic erupted in the Althan area of Surat city in Gujarat on Sunday when a 17-year-old girl climbed to the 10th floor of a high-rise building called Swim Palace and began threatening to commit suicide. Standing on the boundary wall of the penthouse, the girl repeatedly threatened to jump, causing panic among those below, and a crowd of hundreds gathered.

Upon learning of the incident, locals rushed to the scene and immediately informed the fire department. According to Kirti Modh, fire officer at the Bhimrad Fire Station, the control room received information that a girl was attempting to jump from a high-rise building. Teams from the Bhimrad and Vesu fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters arrived at the scene with hydraulic lifts, safety nets, and jumping cushions. As a precaution, a safety net was placed beneath the building to prevent any untoward incidents.

According to reports, the girl, originally from Ayodhya, worked as a housekeeper for a doctor living in the same building in the Althan area. It's being reported that she had an argument with her mother over the phone. During the argument,

her mother blurted out, "It would be better if you die." These words deeply broke the girl's heart, and she went up to the 10th floor of the building to take this extreme step.

An emotional atmosphere ensued, with people trying to persuade her

Seeing the girl standing on the boundary wall, elderly residents, women, and others in the building repeatedly urged her to come down. One elderly man, emotionally speaking, urged her to regain her composure and understand the value of her life. The landlord also assured her that he would provide all possible assistance if she came down safely.

The rescue was successful due to the vigilance of the fire department

During the rescue, when the hydraulic lift reached the top, the girl became even more panicked and threatened to jump if anyone came near her. The fire department team acted with great restraint and understanding. They kept the girl engaged in conversation while she was safely held back with a rope.

After a rescue operation that lasted nearly an hour, the girl was safely brought down. People in the area breathed a sigh of relief. The police and administration have handed her over for counseling.
