Tokyo (The Uttam Hindu): Indian culture, counted among the oldest and richest in the world, has long transcended borders through its food, art, traditions, and attire. Its influence is visible far beyond the subcontinent. A striking example can be found in Japan. A restaurant named 'Indian Spice Factory' in Fukuoka city has become a hotspot on social media for its authentic Indian flavors and atmosphere. Run by a Japanese couple, Nakayama-san and his wife Sachiko-san, the restaurant brings alive the spirit of India.
Diners are greeted with an ambiance recalling traditional Indian eateries. The menu showcases a wide range of regional cuisines from Bengali and South Indian thalis to sweets like firni and snacks like murukku. Meals are served on banana leaves and in earthenware pots, adding to the authenticity. What sets the place apart is Sachiko-san's attire – she serves guests dressed in a sari, reflecting Indian tradition and offering an immersive cultural experience.
"We are happy that we are able to tell Japanese people about Kolkata and Bengali food, which I myself got to know while living in India," said Nakayama, who previously worked in restaurants in Kolkata and Delhi. His years in India familiarized him with cuisine, customs, and dress, elements now brought to their restaurant.
A video about Indian Spice Factory posted on Instagram by travel blogger Sonam Midha amplified its popularity. Midha described her experience as deeply moving, "The love they had for India and Indian culture was unmatched. The whole experience was so touching and my heart was filled with love. It was truly an honour to meet Sachiko-san and Nakayama-san!"
