New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): With the change of generations in the world of social media, preferences and trends have also completely changed. While for the millennials and the generation before them, Facebook and Twitter (X) used to be the main hub of conversation and news, today's new generation i.e. Gen Z is keeping distance from these and giving priority to new age platforms. According to the 'Digital 2026: India' report of 'DataReportal', the popularity of Snapchat has reached a record level in India and around 21.3 crore (213 million) active users are using it. At the same time, Instagram remains at the forefront with 48.1 crore users.

Freedom from the 'monitoring' of relatives and family groups

The biggest reason for Snapchat's popularity among Gen Z is its frank and unfiltered atmosphere. WhatsApp is constantly monitored by relatives' 'good morning' messages, family groups and parents, while Facebook is also connected to a network of distant relatives. The young generation wanted to escape this social pressure and have a space where they could express themselves without any hesitation. Snapchat gives them that freedom, where they can have fun openly with just close friends without the supervision of family.

From screenshot alerts to streaks: These 5 features have become the first choice of the youth

Snapchat's algorithm and design have been developed keeping the youth's mood in mind. Its most popular feature is 'Screenshot Notifications', which prevents any user from saving chats or photos without the other's knowledge, which strengthens privacy. Another craze is 'Snap Streak', in which the fire emoji created by continuously sending snaps turns friendship into an exciting everyday game. Furthermore, features like 'Augmented Reality (AR) Lenses', which are used more than 80 billion times every month in India, 'Snap Map', which shows the real-time location of friends, and 'Private Sharing', which disappears after 24 hours, make it the most trusted app among the youth.

Not just a photo app, it's the safest place for privacy

While Instagram pressures people to post highly staged and perfect-looking photos, Snapchat is free of pretense. Here, quirky facial expressions, everyday moments, and casual conversations reach friends directly and disappear in a matter of seconds. This instant, safe, and judgment-free experience is what has hooked today's youth to the platform, making it more than just a messaging app, but a vital part of Gen Z's digital lifestyle.
