Afghanistan(The Uttam Hindu): A powerful earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck late Sunday night near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, causing massive destruction. Over 500 people have died, and more than 1,000 are injured. The quake was so strong that its tremors were felt across Pakistan and North India, including Delhi-NCR.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was near Jalalabad in Nangarhar Province, just 8 km deep, which worsened the damage. Health department officials confirmed 509 deaths in Nangarhar alone, with many homes destroyed and people still trapped under the rubble. The death toll is expected to rise.

About 20 minutes later, an aftershock of 4.5 magnitude hit the same area, adding to the panic. Afghanistan is an earthquake-prone country and has experienced five quakes in the last month alone. The most recent major quake before this, on October 7, 2023, had killed thousands.
