Washington (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at centralizing the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) across the country. He said that separate rules by different states could slow technological progress and weaken America’s advantage over China.

While signing the order, Trump stated that the United States is far ahead in the field of AI. He emphasized that America has a strong AI industry and is leading not only China but other nations as well. According to him, this is a major global competition in which only one country can win—either the US or China—and currently, the US is ahead.

The new order seeks to create one unified national framework for AI across all states. The administration argues that differing state-level regulations could hinder investments in data centers, computing infrastructure and energy projects. Trump added that if companies are forced to seek approvals from 50 different states, development would become impossible. A senior official noted that leadership in AI directly impacts economic growth, jobs, national security, and technological capability—making a centralized system essential.

During the event, David Sacks highlighted that states are rapidly passing AI regulations. More than a thousand proposals have been filed, and over a hundred have already been approved—mostly in California, New York, and Illinois. Sacks said that the federal government will work with Congress to build a national framework and prevent overly strict state-level rules, while still ensuring necessary protections, such as safeguards for children.

Speakers at the event also framed AI governance as a conflict of political values. When Trump was asked whether he is more concerned about China or AI-related risks, he replied, “Both.”

Trump added that AI is already driving major progress in medicine and drug research, and despite being a developing technology, it has advanced much faster than expected. The executive order directs the government to take strong actions to ensure that AI functions smoothly under one national system, without being obstructed by different state regulations.
