Washington DC (The Uttam Hindu): US President Donald Trump has directed the Defense Ministry (Pentagon) to immediately begin testing nuclear weapons. He says that these tests should be conducted at the same level as China and Russia. It is noteworthy that the US last tested nuclear weapons in the year 1992. On Wednesday, Trump posted on the social media platform 'Truth Social' and wrote that in view of the nuclear tests being conducted by other countries, he has ordered the Department of War to immediately begin testing on an equal basis.

America will conduct nuclear tests after 33 years, Trump said – tests should be equal to Russia and China: President Trump specifically mentioned Russia and China in his statement, saying that Russia currently ranks second and China third, but the two countries could reach equal status in the next five years. Trump's announcement came shortly before meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.

It's worth noting that the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) established a global ban on underground nuclear tests in 1996. Although the United States and China have signed the treaty, it has not yet been formally ratified.

Full nuclear weapon tests (Full Nuclear Weapon Tests) involve the detonation of an actual nuclear bomb to assess its yield, radiation effects, and technical efficiency. Such tests are typically conducted underground or in the atmosphere, but they carry the risk of serious environmental and human health impacts.

The United States last conducted a nuclear test in Nevada on September 23, 1992. Following this, then-President George H.W. Bush announced a moratorium on underground nuclear testing. Russia and China also halted testing since the 1990s. Now, Trump's hint of resuming testing has raised fears of a new global nuclear competition.
