Unpacking the capabilities of America's F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet which Iran claimed to have shot down
The F-15E has been a key player in US military operations, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Its capabilities make it a valuable asset for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Iran has claimed to have shot down an American fighter jet. This claim has once again focused global attention on America's state-of-the-art F-15E Strike Eagle, considered one of the US Air Force's most reliable and multi-role fighter jets. The official US Air Force website, AF.com, has also highlighted this.
The F-15E Strike Eagle was first inducted into service in 1988. It is specifically designed to engage enemy aircraft in the air and deliver precision strikes against ground targets. It operates with a two-man crew—a pilot and a weapon systems officer—which is claimed to enable it to perform complex missions efficiently.
This fighter aircraft is capable of flying in all weather conditions, day or night. Its state-of-the-art avionics and radar systems enable it to identify and accurately strike targets from long distances. Its APG-70 radar system can track both air and ground targets, allowing it to engage multiple threats simultaneously.
A key feature of the F-15E is its LANTIRN (Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared) system, which enables it to fly at extremely low altitudes and conduct precision strikes even at night or in poor weather. This system allows the pilot to fly safely very close to the ground.
The aircraft is also extremely powerful in terms of performance. Its maximum speed is approximately 1,875 mph (over Mach 2.5) and it can fly at altitudes of approximately 60,000 feet. Its long range and heavy weaponry make it ideal for striking deep into enemy territory.
In terms of armament, it can carry a 20 mm internal cannon, air-to-air missiles such as the M-9 Sidewinder and M-120 AMRAAM, and a variety of precision-guided and conventional bombs.
The aircraft is manufactured by the American aerospace company Boeing. Initially, its price was around $31 million, but with modern upgrades, it has risen to nearly $100 million.
According to the US Air Force, the F-15E Strike Eagle is a strength of the US Air Force due to its long range, heavy payload, and ability to complete missions while protecting itself.
