Washington (The Uttam Hindu): Recent US intelligence assessments suggest that China may be considering a more active role in the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. While Beijing appears keen to avoid a large-scale conflict it is reportedly exploring ways to increase its involvement. Officials indicated that the intelligence pointing to possible Chinese support is not conclusive, and there is no confirmed evidence of Chinese weapons being used against US or Israeli forces.

China is said to be proceeding cautiously, maintaining a neutral public stance while internally debating the extent of any potential support to Iran. This reflects a complex balancing act as Beijing seeks to preserve its global image while protecting its strategic interests. Some former officials believe Iran relies on China for key components used in missiles and drones though such materials could also be described as having civilian uses. There are also indications of limited intelligence assistance but details remain unclear.

The situation unfolds as US and Iranian officials continue talks in Islamabad to stabilize a fragile ceasefire after weeks of conflict. Analysts say China’s approach shows careful calculation given its strong economic ties with Iran and its position as a major oil consumer alongside the need to avoid disrupting global trade. Publicly, Beijing has emphasized restraint and neutrality while expanding its diplomatic and economic engagement in the Middle East.
